The Schlagle Stallions won a 54-14 victory over the Sumner Academy Sabres on Friday night at F. L. Schlagle Stadium.

The Stallions came out of the gate strong, recovering the opening onside kick and marching down the field, with a Josh Becton 15-yard rushing touchdown to open the scoring. They followed up a few minutes later with a touchdown pass from Becton to Drelyn Carroll. Becton’s second rushing touchdown gave Schlagle a 20-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Sumner receiver Nahshon Houston provided a lift to the Sabres on the following kickoff, racing the length of the field for a touchdown. However, the surge was short-lived, as Kendall Brewer answered right back with a kickoff return touchdown for Schlagle. Jaylin Richardson closed out the quarter with a rushing touchdown for a 34-7 lead.

Turnovers limited both offenses in the second quarter until Sumner quarterback Dominic Lee hit Houston for a 53-yard touchdown reception with two minutes remaining in the half.

Richardson owned the scoring in the third quarter, with two rushing touchdowns and an interception return for one more. Schlagle’s offensive line was able to get him open for consistently long yardage and produced sustained drives throughout the half.

Schlagle holds the lead in the Kansas City – Atchison League, with a 4-0 record, 1/2 game over Atchison. They play at home against Washington next Friday. Sumner drops to 1-2 in the league. They’ll play at home against Harmon next Friday.

Sporting KC tied Real Salt Lake 1-1 at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, on Monday, overcoming a halftime deficit, but missing the opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with a win.

Sporting KC applied offensive pressure in the opening minutes, only to see Salt Lake strike first on a counter in the 9th minute. Striker Corey Baird put Salt Lake ahead 1-0 with his shot from near the penalty spot.

Defender Ike Opara leveled the score early in the second half, heading in a corner kick from Johnny Russell. Sporting KC put four more shots on goal in the half, but was denied each time by Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando.

The tie leaves Sporting KC in second place in the MLS Western Conference, two points behind FC Dallas with four games remaining in the regular season. Sporting will play the Los Angeles Galaxy next Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas, with another chance to assure a place in the MLS Cup playoffs in November.

Sporting KC celebrated Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in several ways. Players wore gold ribbons, and a gold-colored ball was used in play. The team also invited back previous honorees of their Victory Project program, with over 50 families in attendance. The Victory Project is a partnership with Children’s Mercy Hospital that benefits children with second cancer diagnoses.

The Bonner Springs Braves overcame a rocky first quarter, coming from two touchdowns behind to overtake the Ottawa Cyclones for a 41-21 victory on the Braves’ homecoming night.

A large, loud, orange-clad crowd filled David Jaynes Stadium, but they were quickly hushed when the Braves’ first two possessions ended in interceptions. Ottawa used the short field to run up two scores, leaving the Braves 14 points down.

Bonner quarterback Noah Villareal steadied the offense in the second quarter, and his pass selection became more controlled, choosing swing passes and sideline routes instead of throwing over the middle. The Braves offensive line also loosened up the running lanes to get backs Keyon Thomas and Bryce Krone consistent yardage.

Villareal connected with Ethan Byers in the corner of the end zone for the Braves first score with 9 minutes left in the second quarter. After a defensive stop, the Braves scored again, with Keyon Thomas running in a toss from Villareal, to make the score 14-12.

With less than a minute left in the half, receiver A.J. Watson took a pitch 61 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion put the Braves ahead 20-14.

The Braves played prevent defense to run out the half, but Ottawa still retook the lead on a controversial play. Cornerback Nasjon Porter intercepted a last-second Ottawa pass, but he was stripped of the ball, which Ottawa ran in for a touchdown, giving them a 21-20 halftime advantage. The Braves’ sideline insisted the pass was incomplete to no avail.

Bonner’s defensive line clamped down in the second half, getting several tackles behind the line of scrimmage. The Braves also upped the pressure on the return game, trying multiple times for an onside kick, and recovering one midway through the third quarter.

Ethan Byers pulled in his second touchdown early in the third quarter to pull the Braves back in front for good.

Keyon Thomas scored on a 59-yard pass play with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Bryce Krone followed up an 18-yard run with a 2-yard touchdown carry to top off the scoring. Late interceptions from Keyon Thomas and Noah Villareal kept the Cyclones’ offense from mounting a late challenge.

The victory takes Bonner Springs’ Frontier League record to 2-4. They play at Baldwin next Friday evening at 7 p.m.
