Bishop Ward High School lost 44-14 to the visiting Pembroke Hill Raiders on Friday evening at the Cyclones’ homecoming football game.

Ward scored on its opening drive, stringing together productive plays from senior running back Jared Templin to advance down the field, and then capping off the drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Christian Stein to Christopher Galloway.

Pembroke Hill struck back quickly and then kept up the pressure through the second and third quarters, owning a 20-6 halftime lead and moving ahead 30-6 in the third quarter. Ward continued to move the ball on runs by Templin, but couldn’t keep drives going due to penalties and blocking miscues.

Ward’s defense made an admirable stand in the third quarter. After the Cyclones surrendered a fumble on their own 6-yard line, the defense held the Raiders to a field goal after only 1 yard of progress on three plays.

Ward capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run by Templin, and a 2-point point conversion pass from Stein to Sam Alexander. The Cyclones’ two touchdowns were the most since a September 2017 game against Turner.

The loss drops Bishop Ward to 0-3 for the season. The Cyclones will play host to the Jefferson West Tigers of Meriden, Kansas, at 7 p.m. next Friday.

After a year off due to road construction, the Leavenworth Road Parade came back Saturday in full force, with 41 entries, including four marching bands and seven dance troupes, making the march down Leavenworth Road from Washington High School near 72nd Street to Welborn Elementary near 51st.

Hundreds of spectators lined the sides of the road, most clustered around the shopping areas at 61st and 55th Street, as well as the review stand at Casa de Alabanza near 52nd Street.

The day was sunny and unseasonably warm, with highs in the upper 80s. Emergency workers treated at least one onlooker for heat exhaustion.

Piper running back La’James White scored five touchdowns in a runaway 57-6 home victory over the Baldwin Bulldogs on Friday evening.

White picked up two rushing touchdowns, including a 76-yarder. He also collected three scores through the air from quarterback Karson Schaunaman. White primarily used his speed to outrace Baldwin’s defense around the ends.

Schaunaman connected with receivers Camaro Scott and Jack Robinson for two more touchdowns. Running back Brandon Snell rounded out the scoring with a 43-yard touchdown run.

Piper’s defense was just as dominant as the offense, forcing fumbles on consecutive possessions in the first half and quickly turning the game into a rout.

Junior linebacker Branden Martin led the defense with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Freshman defensive back Mehiki Frazier had an interception in the first half.

The Pirates have started the season with two dominating wins. They’ll face off with Atchison next Friday in Piper’s homecoming game. A major challenge will come in three weeks when they play the Tonganoxie Chieftains (also 2-0) on the road.
