Sporting Kansas City needed all 90 minutes and then some to earn a 1-1 draw against the Portland Timbers at Children’s Mercy Park on Wednesday evening.

Daniel Salloi’s stoppage time goal, his 12th of the season, salvaged what was nearly a wasted opportunity to earn points against a conference rival.

Portland was content to sit back defensively for most of the game, ceding 69% of the possession to Kansas City, and offensive opportunities were few for the home team throughout the first half.

Portland went ahead in the 17th minute on a header from Felipe Mora off a cross by Marvin Loria.

In the second half, Kansas City came out with new offensive determination. Sporting pressed repeatedly into the Portland box, but failed to find the finishing touch.

The closest opportunity for an equalizer in regulation was a header from Gadi Kinda in the 60th minute that forced Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark to make a snap save.

Kansas City was still at a disadvantage when the 90th minute arrived, and the fourth official received an ovation when he indicated 8 minutes of stoppage time for a possible comeback.

Two minutes in, Salloi brought the ball up the right side, passing up a cross into the box in favor of his own shot from 18 yards out. The shot rocketed past Clark and into the net, setting off a relieved celebration from the crowd.

In the final minutes, Kansas City made a spirited attempt to find a winner and survived a near-tragic counterattack by Portland, but was unable to change the final score.

The draw keeps Kansas City in second place in the MLS Western Conference behind Seattle. Sporting will play at Minnesota on Saturday afternoon. The next home game will be at 8 p.m. Aug. 28 against the Colorado Rapids.

KC NWSL wins first victory in club history

On a beautiful summer’s evening at Legends Field, Kansas City NWSL earned the first victory in team history Saturday, with a 1-0 victory over OL Reign.

Although Kansas City’s offense provided scoring chances starting in the first minute, Victoria Pickett put over the match’s only goal in the 73rd minute, charging on to a deflected ball near the Reign penalty spot.

Pickett’s goal held up thanks to a much improved defensive effort. The error-prone back line that allowed three goals at Louisville last Sunday shut out the Reign, blocking four shots and requiring only one save from goalkeeper Abby Smith.

The Kansas City expansion club is still staring up the rest of the league in the standings, 7 points behind Racing Louisville FC, but the win gives fans hope of better things ahead as the team heads into the last 10 games of the 2021 season.

Kansas City will head to the second place North Carolina Courage next Saturday. Their next home game at Legends Field will be at 7 p.m. Aug.  25 against Louisville.

Club Léon roars to 6-1 Leagues Cup win over Sporting KC

Tuesday evening at Children’s Mercy Park, Liga MX team Club Léon scored a lopsided 6-1 win over a Sporting Kansas City lineup composed primarily of reserve players.

The loss knocks Kansas City out of the Leagues Cup, an interleague tournament between Major League Soccer and Liga MX, Mexico’s top-flight league.

In the post-game press conference, head coach Peter Vermes defended his decision to rest most of his starters.

The players aren’t “supermen,” the coach said, and even knowing the final score, he would make the same decision. Player transfers, injuries and the toll of seven matches in 22 days compelled him to find some rest for his team.

Léon’s speed on the attack frequently overwhelmed Kansas City, and their aggressively physical play in the midfield made it difficult for Kansas City to create chances.

Kansas City’s only goal came in the 61st minute from midfielder Cam Duke, who received a pass from the endline from Grayson Barber and slid it into a sliver of opportunity between the defender, goalkeeper and far post from just outside the six-yard box.

A festive contingent of green-clad Léon fans occupied the southeast corner of Children’s Mercy Park, growing louder as the Kansas City fans grew quieter throughout the match.

Club Léon advances to the semifinals of the Leagues Cup, facing off with the winner of Wednesday’s match between Pumas and New York City FC.

Kansas City returns to MLS play, travelling to face FC Dallas on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
