Area under severe thunderstorm warning, power outages reported

A power outage was reported on Monday morning in parts of Kansas City, Kansas, during a thunderstorm.

About 5,000 customers were without power around 7 a.m. Monday.

By 8 a.m., the number was down to around 1,600 customers affected in Kansas City, Kansas, according to the BPU power outage map.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in Wyandotte County from 7:57  a.m. Aug. 31 through 8:30 a.m. Aug. 31, according to the National Weather Service.

After more lightning, the number of customers without power went up to more than 3,700 at 8:39 a.m., then it was back down to more than 2,800 at 8:47 a.m., and down to around 1,500 at 8:57 a.m., according to the BPU power outage map.

This storm has 60 mph wind gusts and penny-size hail, according to the weather service. Damage is possible to roofs, siding and trees.

Residents should move to an interior room on the lowest floor of the building, according to the weather service.
