When it comes to team wins, nobody in the Jayhawk Conference did it better that Kansas City Kansas City Kansas Community as all five Lady Blue Devil starters scored in double figures in a 69-50 win at Labette Saturday.
“The first time all five starters in double figures all season; great to have a handful of places to look for scoring,” said KCKCC coach Joe McKinstry. “I was also happy with our rebounding. Outrebounded by three at the half, I challenged the group at the break to do a better job on the boards and they responded (25-12 in the second half).”
The first win was the 18th in 20 starts for the Blue Devils, who are right back on the road Wednesday at Brown Mackie before returning home Saturday against Fort Scott at 2 p.m. Saturday’s game, which has been designated a Cancer Awareness contest, is the first of three straight Jayhawk home contests for KCKCC, which is the host for Hesston Feb. 3 and Highland Feb. 6.
The Blue Devils got a double double from Brooklyn Wagler, who had 11 points and 11 rebounds; and 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots from Cheyenne North at Labette. Erin Anderson added 13 points and six rebounds; Arrica Daye 11 points and Sierra Roberts 10 in the well-balanced attack.
Labette jumped out to a 7-point lead in the first two minutes and there were three ties before KCKCC opened a 17-12 first quarter lead and extended it to 36-19 at the half.
“We got off to a slow start as we tried to find the right areas to attack Labette’s zone defense,” McKinstry said. “Once we got it going and were able to channel our momentum to both ends of the floor, we were able to get a sizeable lead.”
