Air quality alert in effect today as temperatures reach mid-90s

An air quality orange ozone alert has been issued for Monday, and temperatures are expected to reach a high of 94. Hot, humid weather is in this week’s National Weather Service forecast.

Ozone is expected to be the primary pollutant today, and residents and businesses are asked to avoid activities that lead to ozone formation, according to the Mid-America Regional Council. They should avoid refueling vehicles or topping off when refueling, idling unnecessarily and using gasoline-powered lawn equipment.

Residents are asked to car pool, bike to work, delay or combine errands and use water-based paints and cleaners. Residents should limit strenuous activities with special attention to the very young and those who have pre-existing respiratory conditions.

The Missouri River at Kansas City is well below flood stage, as is the Kansas River in Kansas City, Kansas, according to hydrology charts.

Today, according to the National Weather Service, the heat index will climb to 97, with more hot weather in the forecast for the rest of the week. Little to no rain is in the forecast.
