Heat index could reach 108 today; heat advisory in effect

With a high near 96 and a heat index as high as 108, a heat advisory remains in effect today through Thursday night in Wyandotte County.

Hot and humid weather is expected through the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Showers and thunderstorms could return Sunday as a front moves into the area, the weather service said.

This afternoon will be dangerously hot, and residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors, the weather service said.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.

Those who work or spend time outdoors should take extra precautions, rescheduling strenuous activities to early morning or evening, the weather service said. Take frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Friday, it will be sunny, with a high near 94 and a south wind of 7 to 11 mph, gusting as high as 20 mph, the weather service said.
