Excessive heat warning remains in place

An excessive heat warning remains in effect today for Wyandotte County and the surrounding area.

The warning is in place through 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 12, according to the National Weather Service.

Today’s heat index could be as high as 107, with a temperature near 97, the weather service said.

Residents are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors, according to the weather service. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances, the weather service said.

Thunderstorms could develop along a frontal boundary from the north later Wednesday afternoon and evening, the weather service said.

Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, with the strongest storms capable of 60 mph wind gusts. Frequent lightning and heavy downpours also are possible with this storm.

Today, it will be sunny and hot, with a high near 97, the weather service said. The heat index could be as high as 107. A south southwest wind of 14 mph will gust as high as 24 mph.

Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 77. A south southwest wind of 7 to 11 mph will gust as high as 23 mph.

Thursday, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., the weather service said. It will be mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. The heat index will be as high as 106. A west southwest wind will be 6 to 10 mph.

Thursday night, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 72, according to the weather service. A southwest wind of 5 to 7 mph will become calm after midnight. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Friday, there is a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a high near 87, the weather service said. A calm wind will become east northeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Less than a tenth of an inch of rain is expected.

Friday night, there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a low of 68, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 87, the weather service said.

Saturday night, it will be partly cloudy, with a low of 67, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 87, the weather service said.
