13-year-old rescued at Parkwood Pool

A 13-year-old youth was rescued from Parkwood Pool at about 6:55 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

The boy was pulled from the pool by members of the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department, according to a spokesman for the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.

He was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, the spokesman stated.

The pool at 950 Quindaro Blvd. had been closed and locked, with a fence separating it from the public, according to the spokesman.

The victim was there with two other juveniles, who had all climbed over the fence, the spokesman stated. The victim jumped into the deep end, resurfaced once and then went back under, unable to return to the surface, according to the spokesman.

The victim’s brother arrived and tried to rescue him while the other juveniles alerted the Fire Department. All the individuals who were involved were juveniles.

At a recent UG Commission meeting, it was reported that water would be kept in the pool so they could train lifeguards, but the pool would not be open for public swimming.

Capt. Kyle Harvey of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office said at the time the water rescue occurred, the pool was locked up and the juveniles had climbed over the fence.

  1. All the kids wanted to do was go swimming ! The Unified Government of KC KS is partially at fault the children of WY count have nothing to do there is only one public pool and it just happens to be closed and locked up until 2022 , but the the boys were able climb over the fence to gain access to the pool full of water sounded to them at the time like a good plan of action. Thank God they had sense enough to go get help . Why was it necessary for them to break into the pool in the first place ! We have ‘Parks &Recreation ‘which manage 3 Spary Parks where they can go play in the water and it’s free !!! What are the youth in our county have , same old story nothing , but somebody getting paid!
