Injury crash closes part of State Avenue

Update: Five of the six victims have been upgraded to stable condition, with one remaining in critical condition, according to police. Also, police now have confirmed that some of the occupants were teens. No one was under 16.

East and westbound lanes of State Avenue between 73rd and 75th streets, were closed and expected to remain closed for several hours due to a two-vehicle crash that occurred around 4 a.m. Monday, a police spokesman stated.

All occupants of both vehicles were taken to area hospitals – five in serious and one in critical condition. Several occupants were teens, and two of the victims had to be extricated, the Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman stated.

The cause of the accident has not been determined, but based on the debris field it is likely that speed was a contributing factor, the police spokesman stated.

  1. Dangerous intersection, 1 main reason is the entrances 2 McDonalds off State ave just feet frm light & intersection, if u come n frm 75th Pl have 2 circle lot & this stops entrance frm State also.. Should b looked n 2 as traffic hazard. Wyandotte resident who lives behind said place..

    1. Hmmmm…I agree that this is probably a dangerous intersection, but at FOUR AM in the morning? Doubt it. We don’t have all the details but some were teenagers…out at 4AM???? Watching the video, these were the only 2 cars on the street at the time.

After being lucky enough to have all green lights while driving through that area that particular intersection is the worst because if you have to stop there while heading westbound one burns needed fuel to to pick up speed to clear the next stoplight hopefully and while heading eastbound having to stop there it just simply ruins progress of traversing along with wearing out the brakes – nobody likes stopping there hence the speed throughs and occasional accidents.
