Kansas City Kansas Community College’s streaking women’s soccer team won for the fourth time in just nine days Saturday, blanking Dodge City 5-0.
It was the third straight shutout for the unbeaten and 19th ranked Blue Devils (4-0) and thrust them into the lead in the Jayhawk Division I Conference.
One of only two unbeaten teams in the Jayhawk, they square off against the other, Johnson County (2-0), Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Overland Park. The first game of a doubleheader, the men’s teams clash at 7:30 p.m.
Sophomore Melissa Siegel and freshman Katharina Oelschlaeger each had two goals to lead the way offensively; freshmen Suzie Lopez and Mia Tomasic combined on the third straight shutout.
“The ladies played well, today,” KCKCC coach Shawn Uhlenhake said. “We’re pretty happy to start off 4-0 and pretty fortunate to have stayed healthy after a tough nine days playing good teams.”
Siegel got the Blue Devils out to an early lead, scoring on a pass from Madi Broeker for her first goal and then made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal. Oelschlaeger’s unassisted goal make it 3-0 at halftime.
Kayley Shaw opened the second half scoring on an assist from Kayley Petersen and Oelschlaeger got her second goal on an assist from Siegel.
“We are looking forward to a somewhat normal schedule,” Uhlenhake said. “We’ll probably move up in the rankings and the target will be on our backs so we are going to have to continue to stay prepared. Our upcoming schedule is loaded with tough games; it’s a good test for our players.”
