Two dead in unrelated homicides Friday

Detectives with the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s Major Case Unit are investigating two daytime shootings Friday that have left two individuals dead.

At approximately 2:32 p.m. Friday, officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of Birch on a shooting, according to a police spokesman.

Upon arrival, the officers discovered an adult male with apparent gunshot wounds, the spokesman stated. He was pronounced deceased on scene. The suspect fled the scene on foot, but was located a short time later and taken into custody, according to police.

Out of caution, Argentine Middle School was placed on lockdown, the spokesman stated. Once the suspect was apprehended and the scene was secured, Kansas City, Kansas, Public School officers were able to facilitate a safe, on-time dismissal of students.

At approximately 4:14 p.m. Friday, the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department’s dispatch received a call about a shooting from the 800 block of Barnett, according to the spokesman.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a deceased, adult male outside a residence with an apparent gunshot wound, the police spokesman stated.

The suspect fled the scene on foot prior to officers’ arrival, according to the spokesman. A short time later, and several blocks away, officers located a person of interest and took the person into custody, police said.

Detectives believe these incidents are not related, according to the spokesman.
