COVID-19 cases passed the 100,000 mark in Kansas on Monday, with 103,553 total cumulative cases reported.
The number of cases rose 5,920 from Friday to Monday, according to figures from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The number of additional COVID-19 deaths was 15 since Friday, according to the KDHE. The cumulative total was 1,181.
There were an additional 71 hospitalizations reported statewide in Kansas since Friday, the KDHE reported.
The nation also reached a milestone, with more than 10 million COVID-19 cases recorded, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 website.
On Monday, Wyandotte County reported eight additional COVID-19 cases and one additional death, according to the Unified Government COVID-19 webpage, for a cumulative total of 8,852 cases and 167 deaths. Wyandotte County has about 8 percent of the total cumulative COVID-19 cases in Kansas.
Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System were concerned about the highest ever number of COVID-19 inpatients Monday morning.
There were 68 COVID-19 patients with acute infections, with 26 in the intensive care unit, 14 on ventilators and another 28 in the recovery phase, with three of those on ventilators on Monday, Dr. Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control, said.
It was an increase from Friday morning, when KU Health System reported 53 active COVID-19 patients. On Friday morning there were 18 in the intensive care unit and 10 on ventilators, along with an additional 28 COVID-19 patients not classified as active.
From HaysMed in Hays, Kansas, there were 17 COVID-19 patients, including 12 active and five in the recovery phase. On Friday morning, HaysMed reported 22 COVID-19 patients, with 19 active and three in recovery.
With 96 total COVID-19 patients at KU Health System, doctors are concerned that higher numbers of COVID-19 patients may create problems with hospital bed capacity, staffing and medications at all hospitals in the Kansas City area.
The case numbers can be brought down by wearing masks, avoiding crowds, washing hands and socially distancing, according to the doctors.
During a news conference Monday morning, Dr. Jamie Wagner, division chief, breast surgery, and breast surgery oncologist, discussed a concerning trend that women are putting off mammograms and coming in later with more serious cancer diagnoses. Dr. Elizabeth Muenks, psychologist discussed how to deal with anxiety concerning breast cancer and COVID-19.
Free COVID-19 testing available on Tuesday
A free COVID-19 pop-up test will continue from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at All Saints parish, 811 Vermont, Kansas City, Kansas.
The pop-up test is through Vibrant Health and the Wyandotte County Health Equity Task Force.
UG Health Department COVID-19 tests will be available on Tuesday. The Unified Government Health Department has moved its COVID-19 testing from the 6th and Ann location to the former Kmart at 78th and State Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas. The hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Tests are free for those who live or work in Wyandotte County. The tests are now saliva COVID-19 tests.
The tests now are open to asymptomatic people as well as those who have symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19. Check with the UG Health Department’s Facebook page to see if there have been any changes in the schedule. Bring something that shows that you live or work in Wyandotte County, such as a utility bill.
