UG Commission to meet for COVID-19 update and fire station discussion Thursday

The Unified Government Commission is scheduled to meet remotely for a COVID-19 update and a fire station discussion at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in a Zoom meeting.

According to the agenda, the public will be able to watch the meeting on Zoom on the internet, on UGTV on cable television and on YouTube on the UG’s channel, or listen by telephone.

An email from the Fairfax Industrial Association on Wednesday anticipated that there may be a proposal to close the Fairfax fire station. The FIA and businesses there are opposed to a fire station shutdown, according to the FIA email.

Agreement and penalty on sewer and stormwater noncompliance

The 7 p.m. regular UG Commission meeting will follow, and also will be held remotely, through Zoom, and will be broadcast on UGTV on cable television, on YouTube, and a telephone line will be available to listen.

On the agenda for the 7 p.m. meeting is a negotiated agreement between the UG and the Environmental Protection Agency directing the UG to pay a $50,000 civil penalty to the EPA for past alleged sewer and stormwater noncompliance.

The agreement was negotiated over several years, with more than six months of dispute resolution, according to the agenda. It is a compromise agreement on the sewer overflow control program. The agreement includes a 25-year, $900 million program.
