The Unified Government Black History Committee will hold the 28th Annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Memorial Hall, 600 N. 7th St. Trafficway in Kansas City, Kansas.
The two-hour banquet starts at 6 p.m. with a social hour beginning at 5 p.m.
This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Carla Pratt, dean and professor of law at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.
Prior to joining Washburn Law, Dean Pratt served as associate dean for diversity and inclusion at Penn State’s Dickinson School of Law where she was the Nancy J. LaMont Faculty Scholar and Professor of Law. Dean Pratt has taught courses in constitutional law, federal Indian law, education law, and Race and American law. She will address this year’s theme, “The Color of Justice.”
In addition to the keynote speaker, this year there will be a special Legendary Lifetime Achievement Award presented in recognition of outstanding professionalism and overcoming barriers. Also, one of Strawberry Hill’s small businesses that have been in the community for more than 10 years will be recognized.
The main highlight and purpose of the event is the recognition of our local colleges and check presentation in support of promising students who have a desire to pursue post-secondary education.
The public is invited to support students, celebrate its heritage, culture, and accomplishments during the annual Black History and Scholarship program.
