UG commissioners to be sworn in Jan. 13
Unified Government commissioners will be sworn in at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, in the Commission Chambers, lobby level, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Commissioners who will be sworn in include re-elected and newly elected commissioners Melissa Bynum, at large, 1st District; Brian McKiernan, 2nd District; Christian Ramirez, 3rd District; Harold Johnson Jr., 4th District; and Angela Markley, 6th District. Also to be sworn in at this ceremony will be Register of Deeds Nancy Burns.
History lecture planned Jan. 13
A history lecture on the Ku Klux Klan in Kansas City, Kansas, is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The lecture by Tim Rives, a historian who has written a book on the topic, will discuss the Klan’s rise in the 1920s in Kansas City, Kansas, and its infiltration for 30 years into the city’s political offices.
KCK school board to meet Jan. 14
The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the district’s Central Office, 2010 N. 59th St., Kansas City, Kansas. NAACP to meet Jan. 14
The Kansas City, Kansas, Branch NAACP will meet Tuesday, Jan. 14, for an executive and general membership meeting. The executive meeting will begin at 6 p.m., and the membership meeting will follow at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Resource Center, 4953 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Doors will open at 5 p.m. The NAACP chapter meetings now will be scheduled on the second Tuesday of each month. The guest speaker for January’s meeting will be Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree. NAACP members will set the agenda for the year. All members are encouraged to attend, and the public is welcome. The NAACP is a nonpartisan organization whose mission is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights and of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination, a spokesman stated.

Eagle Days to be Jan. 18-19 at Wyandotte County Lake Park
The 19th annual Eagle Days are scheduled Jan. 18-19 at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The event will be held at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library and at the James P. Davis Hall, both within Wyandotte County Lake Park. Master Gardeners to hold plant propagation class
The Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners are sponsoring a plant propagation class from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, Sunflower Room, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Lynn Loughary, Wyandotte County Extension horticulture agent, will present the class. She will discuss vegetative propagation methods including cuttings, air layering and plant division.
