Gas leak closes State Avenue

A natural gas leak closed State Avenue at 78th Street in Kansas City, Kansas, shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26.
Emergency crews responded to the Wyandotte Plaza area at 78th and State this evening on reports of a natural gas leak.

A gas leak closed down State Avenue on Thursday evening.

A spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department stated that they received a call about  a gas line being struck near 78th and State Avenue about 4:45 p.m.

Emergency crews talked with the contractors and were told that a gas line had been struck while contractors were digging.

Emergency personnel blocked off the street and evacuated surrounding businesses because of strong natural gas readings in nearby businesses, the spokesman stated.

State Avenue was closed to eastbound and westbound traffic.

Atmos Gas personnel arrived about 6:30 p.m. to locate and repair the gas leak, according to the spokesman.

Emergency crews remained on the scene and State Avenue remained closed for some hours from 75th to 78th Street, the spokesman stated.

At last report, Atmos was still working to repair the line that was cut while digging, according to the spokesman.

There were no injuries to residents or fire personnel.
