Grissom to speak at Democratic breakfast

Barry Grisson, a candidate for the U.S. Senate, and Helena Buchmann, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee field manager, will be the guest speakers Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. The event begins with a buffet at 8:15 a.m. followed by a program at 9 a.m. at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Grissom is the former U.S. attorney for Kansas. The meeting is open to all Democrats. The cost of the buffet is $10; or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Those attending do not have to purchase a breakfast.

Butterfly festival planned Saturday

The 14th annual Lawson Roberts Butterfly Festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 4051 West Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. The annual event has scheduled many indoor and outdoor events in conjunction with learning about butterflies and viewing their annual southern migration. Some of the outdoor events may be canceled in the event of rain, but many indoor events will be held regardless of the weather. Events include face painting, crafts, butterfly storytime, insect photo contest awards, an insect zoo and a microscope station. Renaissance Festival continues Saturday and Sunday
The Renaissance Festival will continue from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 130th and State Avenue, Bonner Springs. The theme this weekend will be “Celtic Games,” a celebration of Scotland and its culture, with Highland games. Bonner Springs residents will get $3 off their admission tickets this weekend. Car show planned
A classic car show is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Burger King parking lot area north of The Legends Outlets, 107th and Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

Family story time planned
Family story time is planned from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 21, at the youth services craft room at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. “Clases de Canto,” or Spanish singing lessons, are planned from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in Conference Room B, South Branch Library, 3104 Strong Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. KCKCC is scheduled to play a home volleyball tournament at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.

Democratic barbecue cookoff planned
The Wyandotte County Democratic Central Committee WyCo Amateur Barbecue Cookoff, to be held from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Shelter C, Wyandotte County Park, 126th and State, Bonner Springs. U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids, D-3rd Dist., will kick off the barbecue at noon. Tickets for the cookoff are $20 for adults, and $10 for children under 12 accompanied by an adult. The Jones Sisters will provide the dinner. Those attending may bring blankets and chairs. Church plans parish fiesta
Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2203 Parallel Ave., Kansas City, Kansas, is planning a parish fiesta from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21. The fiesta features Mexican food, music, entertainment and games.

Taco benefit dinner planned Saturday
A kidney transplant fundraiser for Larry Kline, an area resident, will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Moose Lodge 1999, at 6621 Turner Drive, Kansas City, Kansas. The event includes a taco dinner and a silent auction. The cost of the taco dinner is $8. Donations are appreciated.

Alcott Arts Center plans Shakespeare comedy Saturday
A Shakespeare comedy is planned for Saturday at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th, Kansas City, Kansas. The performances will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, indoors at the Alcott. Admission is a $5 donation. The director of “Two People from Verona” will be Susan Proctor, who has directed two Shakespeare plays previous at Alcott. The Alcott is not yet ADA-accessible. Olivia Fox, a trio based in the Kansas City area, will appear at a free concert from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Nebraska Furniture Mart, in the pavilion of the northwest parking lot, 1601 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

Church plans ice cream social
St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1086 N. 94th St., Kansas City, Kansas, plans an ice cream social from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, on the church grounds. Mass will be at 4 p.m. The social will include food, hamburgers, hot dogs, a Mexican dinner, a Burmese Chin dinner, music, dancing, bingo and games for children.

St. Peter’s Fall Festival is planned from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 422 N. 14th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Sporting KC at home for soccer Saturday night
Sporting KC (10-13-7, 37 points) will play at home at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in an MLS match at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas. The Colorado Rapids (10-15-6, 36 points) will visit. Tickets are available at SeatGeek.com. It will be Kick Childhood Cancer Night. The Victory Project will distribute free Kick Childhood Cancer superhero posters, while supplies last.
