Police identify suspect who was killed at South Coy and Gilmore

A suspect who was killed on Aug. 9 at South Coy and Gilmore has been identified, according to a Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman.

The suspect was identified as Jose Mendez, 37, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, police stated.

At 12:51 p.m. Aug. 9, Kansas City, Kansas, officers assisted Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department officers who were chasing a suspect who tried to run over a police officer, the spokesman stated.

The vehicle went the wrong way on I-70, and the driver abandoned the car on I-670, fleeing on foot, according to police.

A Kansas City, Missouri, helicopter tracked the suspect to Coy and Gilmore, where they made contact with the suspect, police said.

When the suspect pointed a gun at officers, the suspect was fatally shot, the spokesman stated.
