UG committees tonight to address levee project, scooters, Piper and Edwardsville improvements

Unified Government committees are scheduled to meet on Monday night at City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

The meetings will begin at 5 p.m. in the fifth floor conference room at City Hall.

On the agenda for the Public Works and Safety Committee meeting at 5 p.m. Monday will be:

• An update on the Kansas City Levee Project, which will raise the levee and upgrade pumps;

• A resolution authorizing a survey of land for the levee project along the Argentine, Armourdale and CID levee system, with the possibility of eminent domain along the levee areas. The area in general is 57th Street to the state line on both the north and south banks of the Kansas River.

• An ordinance regulating the operation of electric-assisted scooters.

• An agreement with the Piper Public Schools for construction of additional improvements at the new elementary school at 131st and Leavenworth Road. According to the proposed agreement, the district will pay for the design of improvements to the intersection at 131st and Leavenworth Road and along Leavenworth Road, estimated to cost $109,000. The UG would pay for the construction of the improvements at the intersection, according to the agreement, estimated a $1.6 million. The district and UG would pay parts of the cost for constructing a multi-use trail. The district would pay $500,000 toward the cost of any improvements recommended by a traffic study in the second phase of the project. The district will pay $880,000 to UG water pollution control as a sewer connection fee, according to the agreement. The district will pay for design and construction of storm sewer improvements.

• An agreement with the city of Edwardsville for sidewalk and roadwork improvements on 4th Street in Edwardsville in conjunction with the quiet zone. Edwardsville will pay for all additional costs of the work, according to the agenda information. The location of the improvements would be quiet zone railroad crossings south of K-32 at the Union Pacific Railroad crossings on 98th, 9th and 4th streets in Edwardsville. The project includes new median, curbs and sidewalks on 4th Street.

The UG Administration and Human Services Committee meeting will follow the PWS meeting.

On the agenda for the Administration and Human Service Committee is a request to accept grant funds, if awarded, for screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment through the National Association of City and County Health Officials. The grant of $97,891.20, if awarded, would address high-risk substance use among women of reproductive age.
