The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning from 10:09 p.m. Monday through 7:15 a.m. Tuesday for urban areas and small streams in Wyandotte County, as well as surrounding counties.
Radar has indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain that will cause flooding, according to the weather service.
One to two inches of rain have fallen.
The weather service advised drivers to turn around and don’t try to cross flooded roads. Drivers should be especially cautious at night.
A flood warning also has been issued for the Kansas River at 23rd Street in Wyandotte County. The location of this river gauge is Kansas Avenue and the state line. This flood warning will be in effect from Tuesday afternoon to Saturday afternoon, with a crest on Thursday evening of 38.9 feet.
Flood stage is 33 feet, the river was at 28 feet at 8:45 p.m. Monday. Minor flooding is forecast. No flooding of areas behind the levee is expected, the weather service said.
A flood warning also is in effect for the Missouri River at Parkville. This gauge is on I-435 over the Missouri River between Wyandotte and Platte counties.
At 8:45 p.m. Monday, the Missouri River at Parkville was 23.5 feet, where flood stage is 25 feet. Moderate flooding is forecast, the weather service said.
The river will rise above flood stage by Tuesday morning and continue to rise to near 29.6 feet by early Thursday afternoon, according to the weather service. The river will fall below flood stage by early Sunday afternoon.
In addition, a flood warning will be in effect from late Tuesday night to late Saturday night for the Missouri River at Kansas City. At 9:30 p.m. Monday, the stage was 26.2 feet, and flood stage is 32 feet. The river will rise above flood stage by Wednesday morning and continue to rise to near 34.7 feet by early Friday morning, then fall below flood stage by early Saturday morning.
This gauge is at Highway 169 and the Missouri River, not far from the City Market in Kansas City, Missouri. At 32 feet, minor flooding outside of the levees occurs.
Wyandotte County also is under a flash flood watch from 7 p.m. Monday through Tuesday evening, the weather service said.
