Teen driver falls asleep, hits sign post off I-70; three injuries reported

A teen driver on westbound I-70 fell asleep, exited the road and struck a sign post early Monday morning, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report.

The accident happened about 1:45 a.m. Monday on westbound I-70, east of the I-435 exit in Wyandotte County.

The driver of a Kia Sorrento that went off the road was a 16-year-old male from Lawrence, Kansas, who had a possible minor injury, according to the trooper’s report.

The teen, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

A 13-year-old male in the Kia had a possible serious injury and also was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, the report stated. He was not wearing a seat belt.

A 9-year-old Lawrence, Kansas, boy who was a passenger in the Kia also had a possible serious injury and was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital, the report stated. He was not wearing a seat belt.
