Fatal accident reported Sunday in Tonganoxie area

A fatal accident was reported at 4:16 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, on westbound I-70 near the Tonganoxie area.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, Tristan Kuritz, 21, of Lawrence, Kansas, lost his life in a five-vehicle accident.

He was in a Chevrolet Cruze and was slowing when a Ford E45 struck it from behind, the trooper’s report stated. The Cruze was pushed into a Dodge Grand Caravan, and the Grand Caravan was pushed into a Star bus. The driver of a Ford F250 was trying to avoid the accident and went from the left lane to the right lane, striking the Grand Caravan. The Ford E45 then struck the barrier.

The driver of the Dodge Grand Caravan, a 33-year-old woman from Beloit, Kansas, had a possible serious injury and was taken to the hospital, according to the trooper’s report.

A passenger in the Chevrolet Cruze, a 21-year-old woman from Lawrence, Kansas, had a possible minor injury and was taken to the hospital, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the E45, a 62-year-old man from Columbia, Montana, had no apparent injury, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver of the Star bus, a 64-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, man, had no apparent injury, the trooper’s report stated. The bus did not have seat belts.

A 74-year-old Burlington, Kansas, woman passenger on the Star bus had a possible minor injury, according to the trooper’s report.

A 72-year-old Silver Lake, Kansas, woman who was a passenger on the Star bus had a possible minor injury, the trooper’s report stated.

A 33-year-old Topeka, Kansas, woman on the Star bus had a possible minor injury, according to the trooper’s report.

A 69-year-old Topeka, Kansas, woman on the Star bus had a possible minor injury, the trooper’s report stated.

The driver of the Ford F-250, a 47-year-old man from St. Robert, Missouri, had no apparent injury, according to the trooper’s report.
