With temperatures at minus 3 at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Wyandotte County remains under a wind chill advisory until noon today, the National Weather Service said.
Wind chills reached a low of minus 19 in the Kansas City area at 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Arctic high pressure building south into the lower Missouri Valley has brought the coldest airmass of the season with dangerously cold wind chills expected through Thursday morning, the weather service said.
The cold wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, according to the weather service. Hypothermia also is a risk. Those who go out should wear a hat and gloves.
Today, temperatures may reach a high near 7, the weather service said. There is a slight, 20 percent, chance of snow showers before 3 p.m., then a slight chance of snow showers between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., then a chance of flurries after 5 p.m. The wind chill will be between minus 2 and minus 12. A north northeast wind of around 5 mph will become calm in the morning.
Tonight, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 6, and a wind chill reading of between minus 1 and minus 6, according to the weather service. An east southeast wind will be 5 to 9 mph.
Thursday, it will be partly sunny, with a high near 35 and wind chill values between 4 and 6, the weather service said. An east southeast wind will be 7 to 9 mph.
Thursday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 25, according to the weather service. A southeast wind of 6 mph will become calm in the evening.
