Waste Management has announced it will suspend trash pickup and recycling services on Wednesday, Jan. 30, because of sub-zero temperatures with negative wind chills.
The temperatures are of life-safety concern, according to Waste Management officials. A polar vortex with extremely cold temperatures has affected a wide area of the Midwest.
“The safety of our employees during these severe cold weather conditions is our priority,” said Paul Howe, spokesperson for Waste Management. “Frostbite and hypothermia are of serious concern for our workers in current conditions.”
All commercial and municipal residential route collections have been suspended for Wednesday. Service will operate on a holiday schedule for the rest of the week. For example, Wednesday routes will be picked up Thursday, and Thursday routes will be picked up Friday.
“We appreciate the understanding and patience of our customers during this extreme cold weather conditions,” Howe said.
