Overnight storm leaves slick roads in area

Rain flash-froze to roadways last night as temperatures dropped into the teens and lower 20s, creating a layer of ice under snow-covered roads.

After the rain, a wintry mix brought more ice and snow to the area, according to the National Weather Service, making for very slick roads in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Extra time and extreme caution will be necessary for anyone driving, the weather service said.

According to the weather service, while flurries are possible through the early afternoon, no significant precipitation is expected today.

There may be several rounds of snow Friday through Sunday, however. These fast-moving storms will produce only minor snow accumulations, if any, the weather service said.


The temperature at 9 a.m. Wednesday was 17 degrees, with a wind chill of 8, according to the weather service.

Today, scattered flurries are possible before 2 p.m., the weather service said. The skies will be sunny with a high near 27 and a west wind of 6 to 8 mph.

Tonight, the low will be around 23 with a west southwest wind of 5 to 7 mph, becoming northwest after midnight, according to the weather service.

Thursday, it will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a temperature rising to almost 25 by noon, then falling to around 15 during the remainder of the day, the weather service said. A north northwest wind of 8 to 16 mph will gust as high as 23 mph.

Thursday night, it will be mostly clear, with a low of 6 and a wind chill between minus 3 and 2, according to the weather service. A north northwest wind of 5 to 9 mph will become light and variable.

Friday, it will be increasingly cloudy, with a high near 33, the weather service said. A south wind of 6 to 13 mph will become west in the afternoon. Winds may gust as high as 25 mph.

Friday night, there is a 20 percent chance of snow after midnight, with a low of 15, according to the weather service.

Saturday, it will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 30, the weather service said.

Saturday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 24, according to the weather service.

Sunday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 44, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 31, according to the weather service.

Monday, there is a 40 percent chance of snow, with a high near 35, the weather service said.

Monday night, it will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 11, according to the weather service.

Tuesday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high near 22, the weather service said.
