Juvenile taken into custody in connection with fatal car crash at 10th and Kansas

A juvenile has been taken into custody as a person of interest in a fatal accident on Dec. 29 at South 10th and Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.

A Kansas City, Kansas, police spokesman stated the initial investigation will be turned over to the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s office for charging.

According to a police spokesman, before the accident, officers had pursued a stolen vehicle and ended the pursuit at 8th and Central Avenue.

The stolen vehicle continued toward 10th and Kansas, where it crashed.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper’s report, an Audi A4 that had been reported stolen ran a red light while going at a high rate of speed at Kansas Avenue and 10th. The Audi hit a Chevy Spark in the driver’s side door, and then the Spark struck a Chevy Aveo that had been stopped at the red light, according to the trooper’s report.

The driver of the Spark, Octavia Barker, 47, of Kansas City, Kansas, was injured in the crash and died from her injuries about 1 a.m. Dec. 30 at a hospital.

Four other persons in the Spark and Aveo had serious injuries, according to the trooper’s report.

The occupants of the stolen vehicle fled the accident scene before police arrived, a police spokesman stated.
