Troopers increase tickets for speeders over New Year’s holiday

Over the New Year’s holiday weekend, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported an increase of about 36.4 percent in tickets issued to speeders.

This year, Kansas troopers issued 954 tickets to speeders as compared to 606 last year, according to figures released by the highway patrol.

In addition, troopers issued 825 speed warnings in 2019, compared to 482 in 2018.

About 885 motorists were assisted over the holiday this year, compared to 936 last year.

The Kansas Highway Patrol worked two fatal crashes, including one in Wyandotte County on Central Avenue, over the holiday weekend. The crashes did not involve alcohol.

In all, 22 driving under intoxication arrests were made statewide by the highway patrol on the New Year’s weekend, as compared to 19 during the holiday period last year.
