Firefighter injured at vacant house fire

A firefighter was injured while fighting a fire at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at 1324 Waverly Ave., according to a Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department spokesman.

The firefighter was injured after falling down a staircase in the two-story home, according to the spokesman.

The injured firefighter had a lower extremity injury and was taken to the hospital, the spokesman stated. There were no other injuries at the fire.

When firefighters first arrived at the home, they found the second story of the vacant structure was fully involved, the spokesman stated.

Crews attacked the fire, then went into a defensive attack, according to the spokesman.

The spokesman stated there was a $35,000 estimated loss to the property.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation, according to the spokesman.
