Kansas City, Kan., Mayor Mark Holland was the guest speaker for a labor union benefit for the Boy Scouts, the George Meany Award Dinner on Thursday evening, Aug. 21, at the Argosy Casino, Riverside, Mo.
At the dinner, awards were presented to individuals and organizations from labor unions who have worked with the Boy Scouts, volunteering their time on Scout projects.
In his speech, Holland talked about how Kansas City, Kan., formerly had a prevailing wage ordinance that was taken away by the Legislature last session. He said that many of the newer projects in Kansas City, Kan., such as The Legends Outlets, Cerner office buildings and additions to the General Motors plant, were built under the prevailing wage ordinance.
He also said that he would try to make sure more of the jobs that become available in city and county government would be for Kansas City, Kan., and Wyandotte County residents.
Also speaking at the event was Scout Paul Allen Salary.
Receiving the 2014 George Meany Award were Russell Burton, Plumbers and Gasfitters Local 8; and Michael Hochstedler, United Auto Workers Local 31.
Receiving the Community Labor Partner Award were the Electrical Corporation of America and the Apprentice and Journeyman Training Committee of Sheet Metal Workers Local 2.
