Summer concert to be Aug. 23 at Legends
Dave and Buster’s Summer Concert Series will continue at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, on the rooftop patio at The Legends Outlets. Allied Saints will perform from 9 p.m. to close Aug. 23. Different bands will play on Saturdays through September.
Tiblow Trot to take place Aug. 23
The 36th annual Tiblow Trot will take place at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Kelly Murphy Park, Elm and West 2nd, Bonner Springs, Kan. It is a 5-mile run or 2-mile walk. There is an entry fee. For more information, see http://www.sportkc.org/sportkc.aspx?pgID=866&event_id=1061.
Lecture offered Aug. 23 on Celtic folklore
A Celtic folklore lecture will be given from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Alcott Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan. Jane Nichols, who has taught a class on the topic since 1992 with the Communiversity program at University of Missouri at Kansas City, will give the lecture. She also portrays an Irish business woman with the Society for Creative Anachronism. Topics that are expected to be covered include the four great holidays of the Celts, their major deities, and hero tales of Ireland, Wales and the Continent. Nichols’ knitted fiber art will be on display, including a Viking rune sweater. Finger food typical of the Middle Ages will be available. The Alcott art gallery will be open during the event. Young Republicans to meet
The Wyandotte County Young Republicans will meet the fourth Thursday of
each month. This month the group will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Main Kansas City, Kan., Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. The group is open to Republicans between 18 and 40 years old.

NAACP to meet Sept. 2
The Kansas City, Kan., Branch NAACP will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Bethany Medical Office Building, 21 N. 12th St., Kansas City, Kan., in the second floor meeting room. The executive committee will meet at 6 p.m., followed by the general membership meeting at 7 p.m. At 7 p.m. there will be an election of the nominating committee, for the purpose of election of officers and at-large members of the executive committee. Workshop offered to optimize health
A free workshop, Kansans Optimizing Health Program, will be held Sept. 3 and continue on Wednesdays for a total of six meetings. The workshop is for adults with an ongoing health condition, and will provide practical ways to deal with pain and fatigue, and will provide information on nutrition and exercise, understand new treatment choices, find better ways to talk with the doctor and family about health. Those with conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, and anxiety may be interested in this workshop. “Give Yourself Good Credit” is the title of a program to be offered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, at Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Learn about credit protection identity protection, fraud prevention and restoring your good name if you are a victim of fraud. Men and women may attend. The program is offered in partnership with Heartland Habitat for Humanity and Wells Fargo Bank.
First Friday meeting to be Sept. 5
The Kansas City, Kan., Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Frist Friday Focus on Sept. 5 at the Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway, near I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kan. Garage sale to benefit food pantry
A garage sale Sept. 6 at CrossRoads Family Church, 8822 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan., will be a benefit for a food pantry located there. The event is sponsored by the Civitan Sochi Club. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 6. Those attending will be able to pay $10 for a 13-gallon bag of garage sale items. So far, clothing and books have been donated to the garage sale, with other items expected.
Heroes for Healing event to benefit kids’ emergency shelter
Frontier Steakhouse, 94th and State Avenue, Kansas City, Kan., will serve as host for the fifth episode of Heroes for Healing on Sunday, Sept. 7, to benefit the new PACES children’s emergency shelter. Bikers can enjoy a scenic motorcycle ride from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., preceded by registration and breakfast starting at 9 a.m. Registration is $25 per rider; $15 per passenger; includes breakfast at Frontier Steakhouse. The main event will feature live music by four bands, an auction and food from 2 to 8:30 p.m. at the steakhouse. Children’s activities are scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m.; the live auction begins at 4:30 p.m. Bands performing will include Dennis Laffoon’s All Star Band; Big Time; State Line Drive; and Issues. Food and prize tickets will be available for purchase at the event. PACES is conducting a capital campaign to build a new emergency shelter for kids removed from their homes because of suspected abuse. The new shelter will increase PACES capacity to help care for 10 children every day and reduce the number of kids being turned away or sent outside the county for temporary foster care. United Way of Wyandotte County will kick off its Live Heroic annual campaign with its annual kick-off luncheon set for 11:30 a.m. Sept. 11 at the KCKCC Technology Center. Dotte Trot to benefit SAFE fund
The Dotte Trot, a 5K and 10K run, will be run at 8 a.m. Sept. 27 at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 9100 Leavenworth Road, Kansas City, Kan. All proceeds from the run benefit the Surviving Spouse and Family Endowment Fund. SAFE supports the families of law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency service personnel in the Kansas City metropolitan area who have died while protecting the community and citizens.
