Lease-purchase of tasers moves through UG committee

The lease-purchase of 129 tasers received preliminary approval from a Unified Government committee on Monday night.

The cost of the 129 tasers, as listed in the five-year lease-purchase agreement with Axon Enterprise, would be a maximum capital cost of $313,053, according to UG documents.

The lease-purchase will mean there will be enough tasers for all officers to carry them on calls for service, according to an assistant Kansas City, Kansas, police chief who spoke at the Public Works and Safety Committee meeting.

The agreement will include a five-year warranty, and it is scheduled to be paid back over five years. The first year’s bill was $47,093.

The taser lease-purchase will include cartridges and “related equipment,” according to the agreement. Equipment includes holsters, battery packs, handles and a data download kit, according to documents. The agreement was signed by Robert Driscoll of Scottsdale, Arizona, for Axon.

The tasers will next go to a Unified Government Commission meeting for approval on Dec. 6.
