Man sentenced in connection with traffic death

A man was sentenced to a controlling sentence of 19.4 years in prison this morning in connection with the death of a woman in a vehicle crash Feb. 17 in Kansas City, Kan.

Christopher Stewart, 29, was sentenced in Wyandotte County District Court. He had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and eluding a police officer in connection with the vehicle crash at 34th and Shawnee Drive in Kansas City, Kan.

Stewart had been fleeing from a police officer when his vehicle ran into another vehicle. Graciela Olivas, in the other vehicle, died in the crash.

Stewart’s sentence was ordered to run consecutively to a 36-month sentence imposed on Stewart in an unrelated case for possession of methamphetamine.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Sheryl Lidtke prosecuted the case. The sentences were imposed by District Judge Robert P. Burns.
