Flood warning issued through 4 p.m. today

The Kansas River near 55th Street in Kansas City, Kansas, on Monday morning. The Kansas River rose to about 27.3 feet Monday morning, and could go into the action stage on Thursday or Friday. Flood stage is 33 feet.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning from now through 4 p.m. today for Wyandotte County.

Also under the flood warning are Johnson and Miami counties in Kansas, and western Cass County, Clay County, eastern Platte County and Jackson County in Missouri.

At 9:54 a.m., local law enforcement reported flooding in several locations in the Kansas City area, according to the weather service warning.

From 3 to 5 inches of rain have fallen in the Kansas City area, the weather service said.

The flood warning replaces a flash flood warning earlier today.

Motorists are advised to turn around and not attempt to drive through flooded roads.

Rain is in the forecast through Tuesday night.

The weather service says today, Columbus Day, includes a 50 percent chance of more showers. The high will be 81 with a south wind of 10 to 13 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Tonight, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers are likely and a thunderstorm possible after 4 a.m. The low will be 67 with a south southeast wind of 8 mph. Between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday, there is a 90 percent chance of showers and a thunderstorm, with a high near 76 and a south southeast wind of 6 to 11 mph. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

Tuesday night, there is an 80 percent chance of rain and a thunderstorm before 1 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 49 with a south southwest wind of 7 to 9 mph becoming west northwest after midnight. Between a quarter and half-inch of rain is possible.

The intersection of 12th and Miami in Kansas City, Kansas, sometimes sees flash flooding in a storm. It was not flooding in mid-morning Monday, although there was some standing water.
