T-Bones stay hot in KCK heat; clinch third series sweep

Nine wins in a row for KCK team

A three-run fifth inning secured the Kansas City T-Bones ninth consecutive win and third sweep as they clinched the series against the Lincoln Saltdogs on a steamy Thursday night T-Bones Stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.

It was “Salute to KU Night,” giving a shout-out to the T-Bones’ neighbors down I-70 at the University of Kansas.

Both Kansas City and Lincoln started the game slow with no action until the third inning. Dylan Tice led off the inning with a double followed by a single from Todd Cunningham that brought around Tice for the T-Bones first run of the game.

In the top of the fifth, Chad Hinshaw doubled for the Saltdogs. Christian Ibarra then singled, and Randolph Oduber advanced to first on an error by Taylor Featherston, scoring Chad Hinshaw to put the Saltdogs on the board and even the score 1-1.

The T-Bones re-gained their lead in the fifth with a single from Keith Curcio. The Saltdogs Kyle Kinman then walked Tucker Pennell and hit Tice and Cunningham which brought around Curcio for the T-Bones second run of the game.

Taylor Featherston finished the inning with an RBI single that scored Pennell and Tice, making the score 4-1 Kansas City.

In the top of the seventh, Keith Curcio halted the Saltdogs comeback attempt with a laser throw from right field to catcher Tucker Pennell to tag out the runner at home and end the inning.

Joe Filomeno gave up the only home run of the night in the top of the eighth inning. Curt Smith hit a bomb to left center to cut the T-Bones lead, with the score 5-2 KC.

The T-Bones tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with a Todd Cunningham RBI single that brought home Dylan Tice from the base pads and made the score 6-2 KC.

Carlos Diaz came in to close the game, striking out the first batter he faced and allowing no hits, with a final score of 6-2 Kansas City. Starting pitcher Barrett Astin got the win for Kansas City, bringing his record to 5-1 on the season.

Thursday night’s win marked the third consecutive series sweep for the T-Bones, who are back at home Monday, July 2, when they take on the Sioux Falls Canaries at 7:05 p.m.
