Meeting asks residents for opinions about future of Main Library
A meeting planned from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 7, will ask residents to share their opinions on the future of the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. The meeting is in the second floor auditorium at the Main Library. Leavenworth Road Association to meet May 8
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet Tuesday, May 8, at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. A potluck dinner and social hour at 6 p.m. will be followed by a meeting at 7 p.m. Crack chicken spaghetti bake will be provided, with participants bringing other dishes. The guest speaker will be Chris Slaughter, manager of the Unified Government Land Bank. The meeting is open to the public.

Book club to meet May 8
The Monthly Book Club will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The club is facilitated by Theresa Bysel. Grinter Jamboree planned May 8
The Grinter Jamboree is planned at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at the Grinter barn, 1400 S. 78th St. The band MP3 will perform a tribute to George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Admission is $5 per person. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Program planned on May 8 on immigrants and refugees in the community
“They Are Our Neighbors: Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave. The program may discuss the difference between an immigrant and a refugee, what it means to have a green card and be a permanent resident versus a citizen, how many immigrants and refugees are living in the city, where they come from and why, do they have to pay taxes, how the community can help to welcome and integrate them. There will be stories from immigrants and refugees who settled in the Kansas City area.

BPU to meet May 9
The Board of Public Utilities will meet Wednesday, May 9, at the BPU administration building, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The work session will begin at 5 p.m. May 9 and will include a board update, general manager update and Western Fuels report. The regular meeting will begin at 6 p.m. May 9 and will include a visitors’ time, preliminary March financial report, board comments, general manager comments, and a closed executive session. The BPU Finance Committee will meet from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. May 9 at the BPU administration building, 540 Minnesota Ave.

Health fair planned May 10
A free Provider-Health Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 10 at the Pierson Community Center, Pierson Park, 1800 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. The community event is sponsored by the Wyandotte County-Kansas City, Kansas, Human Services Department and Council of Community Members. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families may attend, and information about services and resources will be provided. KCK school board to meet May 10
The Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Education will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the J.E. Dunn Logistic Center, 240 S. 65th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The meeting will include regular business, as well as an update by J.E. Dunn Construction on the district’s 2016 bond initiative projects, small business and community economic inclusion program.

Program offered on soil mapping
Residents are invited to a program on soil mapping information at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at the Sunflower Room, Wyandotte County Extension Office, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The Soil Conservation Service in Wyandotte County offers soil mapping services, as well as soil erosion, pollution and storm water management. Those attending the presentation May 10 by Lonnie Miller, soil scientist, will find out how they can use the soil mapping information as it pertains to their own property. James to speak at FIA meeting May 10
Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, May 10, Fairfax Industrial Association luncheon. The luncheon will be from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 10 at Neff Packaging Systems, 555 Sunshine Road, Kansas City, Kansas. The cost of the luncheon is $25. Shepherd’s Center to hold Book and Brick-A-Brac sale May 11 and 12
The Shepherd’s Center of KCK will hold its 24th annual Book and Bric-A-Brac sale on Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, at the First Baptist Church of Turner, 701 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. Donations of books and other sale items will be accepted at the church beginning 8 a.m. Thursday, May 10. Possible sale items include household items, dishes, decorations, towels, and holiday items. Clothing donations will not be accepted. In addition, church members will hold a $5 breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12. Proceeds from the sale benefit the programs and services of the Shepherd’s Center of KCK, and proceeds from the breakfast will help the church provide summer camp fees for a young person. Youth Policy Debate to be May 12
The WyCo Youth Policy Debate will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Kansas City Kansas Community College, Upper Jewell building, 7250 State Ave. Sponsored annually by State Sen. David Haley, D-4th Dist., the annual debate is open to students attending Harmon, Schlagle, Washington and Wyandotte high schools, Sumner Academy and College Gateway program. It is the seventh annual event. Sen. Haley started the event in 2012 as a way to encourage political awareness and active citizenry in Wyandotte County youth. In the event, young adults will have an opportunity to think on their feet and be heard by a community audience about current events. Cross-Lines schedules community picnic
Cross-Lines has scheduled a community picnic from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at 646 S. 7th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The event will include food, music, crafts, games and prizes, and those who live in the area are invited.

Affirmations group to meet Mondays
The Affirmations and Living Free Growth Group for women will meet from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 14, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The group will discuss how women think about themselves, which plays a role in how effective and happy they are in their lives. The group meets Mondays. Graduation ceremony planned May 16
The 500 REACH Virtual Learning Center will award high school diplomas on May 16 to students who have successfully completed their coursework for a high school diploma. Bike safety event planned May 19
Elementary-aged kids will have the opportunity to learn tips on cycling safety, to get free bike safety helmets and t-shirts and to sneak a peek at the attractions at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City at a free family event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19. The annual Kansas City, Kansas, Kiwanis West Bike Rodeo is back for the 12th year with expanded offerings and the same great location. The event will be held rain or shine in the parking lot and entrance area of Schlitterbahn Waterpark, Kansas City, 9400 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The KCK Kiwanis West, in partnership with Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City, Big D Cycling, Midwest Trauma Society and numerous other community businesses and organizations, are committed to helping area youth ride their bicycles safely. Thrive and Drive planned May 19
Thrive and Drive will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Farmers’ Market, 129 Elm St., in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The day will honor first responders, service members and local farmers. Activities include a barbecue cookoff for fire, police, EMT and military members, a kids corner, art booths, live musical entertainment and a car show. “Let’s Move, WYCO,” a 5K color run, walk and bike, health fair and block party, is planned on Saturday, May 19, at the New Bethel Church, 745 Walker Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.
