Candidates scheduled to speak at Democratic breakfast
Three Democratic candidates for governor, State Sen. Laura Kelly, Dr. Arden Andersen and State Rep. Jim Ward, are scheduled to speak April 21 at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast. The buffet will open at 8:15 a.m. April 21 at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Reservations are requested to [email protected] by Friday, April 20, for those who plan to attend. The buffet will cost $10 a person; $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Those who attend do not have to purchase a breakfast. Those who require special needs are asked to state it in their reservations. The program is open to all Democrats. All Democratic candidates may distribute campaign literature and signs before and after the program. Other Democratic candidates for governor are scheduled to speak in May.
Central Avenue cleanup scheduled April 21
The Central Avenue Betterment Association is sponsoring an Earth Day celebration cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21. After a light breakfast at 9 a.m. there will be a cleanup immediately afterward. Volunteers will have lunch at noon at 1621 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. St. Paul’s to celebrate 160th anniversary Saturday with special events
Members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1300 N. 18th St., Kansas City, Kan., will celebrate its 160th anniversary with special events on Saturday, April 21. A festive Holy Eucharist will be held at 2 p.m. The co-celebrants will be the Rt. Rev. Michael Pierce Milliken, the bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Kansas; and the Very Rev. Craig Loya, the dean of Trinity Cathedral in Omaha. The Rev. Dixie Roberts Junk, the priest-in-charge at St. Paul’s, will assist. A gala celebration is planned at 3:30 p.m. in the parish hall. Quindaro Symposium continues April 21
A symposium April 19-21 will be about Quindaro, its history and abolitionist politics. The Freedom’s Frontier symposium will be at two sites. It is part of the process of designating the Quindaro ruins as a national historic landmark. The keynote address by Dr. Quintard Taylor, University of Washington historian, was Thursday, April 19, at the Kansas City, Mo., Central Library. Barnyard Babies to be April 21 at Ag Hall
Barnyard Babies, featuring young farm animals, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, 126th and State, Bonner Springs. The event will feature life on a farm, a tractor petting zoo, fresh produce, kiddie pedal pull contests and giant balloon animals. There will be live musical entertainment. Clown school workshop planned
A clown school workshop is planned from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs. The free one-day workshop by the Kansas City Clowns Club will teach basic skills involved in being a clown. There is a limit of 20 persons per workshop. Sloppy Joe dinner and bingo event planned
Christ the King Catholic Church will hold a sloppy Joe dinner and bingo event at 5 p.m. April 21 at Davern Hall, 3024 N. 53rd St. The cost of the sloppy Joe dinner will be $5 for adults; or $12 for a family of up to two adults and four children.
KCKCC awards and scholarship event planned April 21
The Mid-America Education Hall of Fame Awards and Scholarship Event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Thomas R. The annual event is the signature initiative of the Kansas City Kansas Community College Foundation, raising over $100,000 in 2017 to support student scholarships.
