KCKCC plans health fair April 10
Kansas City Kansas Community College wants to give students, staff, faculty and the community a chance to maintain their health during the college’s 2018 Health Fair. The Health Fair is from 9 a.m. to noon April 10 in Upper Jewell on the KCKCC main campus, 7250 State Ave. Entrance into the fair is free. However, there is a fee associated with some activities. The lab will not accept insurance. These tests include:
• 20 Chemistries and Lipids with CBC. This includes electrolytes, lipids, hemoglobin and hematocrit. $25
• Cancer Antigen 125 (for women). This is a possible indicator for ovarian cancer. $35
• Prostate specific antigen PSA (for men). This is possibly indicative of prostate cancer. $20
• Thyroid stimulating hormone TSH. $15
• Hemoglobin A1C. This will tell the average level of glucose. $15
• Vitamin D. $25
• Vitamin B12. $25
• Thyroid Testing. $20
• HsCRP (indicator of inflammation). $15

Jazz cabaret to be April 12

Wyandotte County Ethnic Festival to be April 14
The Wyandotte County Ethnic Festival will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College fieldhouse, 7250 State Ave. The educational event, open to the public, promotes contact between people of different cultural backgrounds. More than 50 organizations, countries and ethnicities from Wyandotte County are expected to have displays. Blautaler German Dancers, Danny Hinds and Ayotunde Barbados Drumming and Dance, Garima Yadav, Kathak dance performance, St. Andrew Scottish Highland Dancers, and Panamanian Dancers. Musicians expected to perform include Hrvatski Obicaj Croatian Orchestra; Shawn and Gloria Derritt singing “America the Beautiful”; a reggae band; Allen Arias with Costa Rican guitar, cajon and voice; Roger Suggs, hip-hop; Tez and Tam Gospel Music; Hmong Singers; and Lem Sheppard folk music. There will be a Creative Children’s Corner. A food court will offer dishes from India, Peru, West Africa, Kenya and Mexico. Registration open for Blue Devil 5K and Kids Trot May 5
The 2018 Blue Devil 5K and Kids Trot will be May 5 at Kansas City Kansas Community College. The Blue Devil 5K, which is in its 14th year, is at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5. The course winds through the KCKCC campus on the roads, walking paths and sidewalks. The Kids Trot follows at 9 a.m. and is geared toward children 11-years and younger. Childcare volunteers will provide activities for the children from 7:30 to 9 a.m., so parents can participate in the run-walk. Registration for the 5K is $20 per person through March 31. The Kids Trot is $10. Registration for both the Blue Devil 5K and the Kid’s Trot includes a T-shirt, Finisher’s Medal, Goodie Bag and an all-you-can eat pancake breakfast following the event. About 200 people participated in the 5K and Kids Trot in 2017. Awards will be given to the top overall male and female finishers. In addition, the winner of each age group will receive an award and a prize. Children in the Kids Trot will run in heats based on age groups. Distances will range from 25 meters to one-quarter of a mile. No strollers are allowed. Program planned on May 8 on immigrants and refugees in the community
“They Are Our Neighbors: Immigrants and Refugees in Our Community” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, in the Main Kansas City, Kansas Public Library, second floor auditorium, 625 Minnesota Ave. The program may discuss the difference between an immigrant and a refugee, what it means to have a green card and be a permanent resident versus a citizen, how many immigrants and refugees are living in the city, where they come from and why, do they have to pay taxes, how the community can help to welcome and integrate them. There will be stories from immigrants and refugees who settled in the Kansas City area.
