AARP Tax-Aide program offered
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program is being offered at sites in Kansas City, Kansas. The volunteer-based program offers tax assistance for those over 50 and also for persons who qualify by income. The locations include the Providence YMCA-Ball Center, 8601 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City Kansas, appointment needed; Kansas City Kansas Community College, 7250 State Ave., appointment not required; Turner Recreation Center, 831 S. 55th, appointment required; and Kansas City, Kansas, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St., no appointment required. Greater Kansas City Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast to be March 1
The 57th annual Greater Kansas City Mayors’ Prayer Breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Kansas City Downtown Convention Center Ballroom, 301 W. 13th St., Kansas City, Mo. The guest speaker at the breakfast will be Lamar Hunt Jr., owner of the Kansas City Mavericks hockey team. The breakfast is co-sponsored by more than 30 area mayors. This year the breakfast will benefit the nonprofit Sheffield Place of Kansas City, which helps homeless mothers and their children become more self-sufficient. Container gardening program planned March 1
A program on container gardening will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1, at the Wyandotte County Extension Office, Sunflower Room, 1208 N. 79th St., Kansas City, Kansas. To be covered in this program are simple design tips for choosing the right plants for success, whether they are flowers, green plants, succulents, herbs or vegetables. Opening day at lake to be March 3
The opening day at Wyandotte County Lake will be Saturday, March 3. An opening day breakfast will take place from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 3 at the Davis Hall at Wyandotte County Lake Park, 91st and Leavenworth Road. The event is a fundraiser for the Leavenworth Road Association. Biscuits and sausage, coffee, milk or orange juice will be available for $10 per person, or half-price for children under 10.
Dining with Diabetes program to begin March 7
Dining with Diabetes, a program that will help people learn about and manage Type 2 diabetes, will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, March 7, 14, 21 and 28, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The program includes information about planning meals and snacks with healthy recipes, cooking demonstrations and food sampling, motivation and support, ideas for being more active and an understanding of how diabetes affects one’s health. The Mid-America Education Hall of Fame Awards and Scholarship Event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Thomas R.
