Two candidates to speak
Two Democratic candidates are scheduled to speak at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Las Islas Marinas, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Laura Kelly, the Kansas Senate assistant minority leader, from Topeka, who is running for Kansas governor, and Mike McCamon, a candidate for the U.S. House, 3rd District, from Overland Park, are the scheduled speakers. State Rep. Stan Frownfelter, D-37th Dist., Democratic assistant leader of the Kansas House, will give an update on the Legislature. The breakfast buffet begins at 8:15 a.m., with the program starting at 9 a.m. The event is open to Democrats. The cost of the breakfast buffet is $10, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Those attending do not have to purchase a breakfast.

Harlem Renaissance history and art events continue at library
The Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library’s Harlem Renaissance art event will continue with events Feb. 17. “A Night at the Savoy” is planned at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Main Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, 625 Minnesota Ave. The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra will perform hits from the 1920s in a re-creation of the atmosphere of the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Those attending may come as they are or dress in the fashion of the 1920s to listen and dance. Black history banquet planned Feb. 17
The 26th annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Reardon Convention Center, 5th and Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. The guest speaker is Aaron Thomas, a native of Kansas City, Kansas, who is executive producer of the CBS series, S.W.A.T. The theme is “Balance the Divide: Differences Do Not Have to Divide Us.” Tickets for the program are $50. Retreats planned today
A spiritual day of reflection is planned from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 17 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church basement, 708 N. 4th St., Kansas City, Kansas. After Mass, there will be reflection, refreshments and a guest speaker on the topic, “Living Our Baptism.”

A Lenten prayer retreat for women will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon Feb. 17 at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 409 N. 15th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Registration and a continental breakfast in the parish hall will be followed by a Mass at 11:30 a.m. A Lenten reflection will be presented. The cost of the retreat will be $15.
