Wyandotte County has the highest unemployment rate in the state of Kansas, at 7.9 percent, according to June statistics released recently by the Kansas Department of Labor.
Kansas City, Kan., also had the highest unemployment rate, 8 percent, of all larger cities listed by the state. One year ago, the unemployment rate was 8.4 percent here.
The rate represents 5,604 persons who are listed as unemployed in the county and 5,246 who are listed as unemployed in the city.
In comparison, Wichita’s unemployment rate was 6.3 percent and Topeka, 5.6 percent.
The Kansas unemployment rate was listed as 4.9 percent seasonally adjusted, up slightly from the previous month but down from one year ago.
More than 55,000 private sector jobs have been added since January 2011, according to state officials. They said there was a slight increase in the labor force.
