Play to be presented Nov. 12 at KCKCC
The Kansas City Kansas Community College Drama Club is presenting “Speech & Debate,” a play directed by a KCKCC student. Written by Stephen Karam, “Speech & Debate” follows three teenage misfits in Salem, Ore., who discover they are linked by a sex scandal that has rocked their town. When one of them sets out to expose the truth, secrets become currency, the stakes get higher and the trio’s connection grows deeper. The play does have adult situations. Parental guidance is advised. “Speech & Debate” ran Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and continues with a matinee performance Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2:30 p.m. The performance is in the KCKCC Performing Arts Center, 7250 State Ave. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and non-KCKCC students. All KCKCC students, staff and faculty are admitted free with valid identification. “Speech & Debate” is a Drama Club production, directed by student Gary Enrique Bradley-Lopez in his first full play directorial debut. Leavenworth Road Association to meet Nov. 14
The Leavenworth Road Association will meet Nov. 14 for a potluck dinner, social hour and meeting at the Eisenhower Recreation Center, 2901 N. 72nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. The dinner and social hour will be at 6 p.m. The LRA will provide smoked turkey by grill chef, Sylvester Smith. Those who attend may bring a covered dish to share. Grinter Jamboree to be Nov. 14
The Grinter Place Friends are bringing back their Jamboree, which will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 14, the second Tuesday of the month, at the Grinter Barn, 1400 S. 78th, Kansas City, Kansas. One was held during October and about 40 to 50 people attended. The MP3 Band will perform. There will be a cover charge of $5 per person, and a snack bar will be available to purchase light refreshments. Class on Medicare offered Nov. 15

Free diabetic foot ulcer seminar offered Nov. 15
The Providence Medical Center Wound Care Center will present a free Diabetic Foot Ulcer Seminar and Screening* at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Providence Medical Center 8929 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan. Local experts will present information on the role of diabetes in the development of foot ulcers and current treatments available for diabetic foot ulcers. Following the free educational seminar, the first 30 in attendance will be eligible to receive a foot screening to include: Initial Diabetes Foot Assessment, Microfilament test (Checks for Peripheral Neuropathy of the foot), Quantaflow Test (Checks for Peripheral Artery Disease). BPU to meet Nov. 15
The Board of Public Utilities will meet for a work session at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the BPU offices, 540 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. On the agenda for the work session are a board update, general manager update and 2018 major capital projects. Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast to be Nov. 18
Democratic candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, 3rd District, have been invited to speak at the Wyandotte County Third Saturday Democratic Breakfast Nov. 18 at Las Islas Marias, 7516 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The event begins with a buffet at 8 a.m. Saturday followed by the program at 9 a.m. There is a $10 charge for the breakfast, or $6 for students and those on limited incomes. Coffee costs $2, for those not purchasing breakfast. Those attending are not required to purchase breakfast. The event is open to all Democrats. Veterans Pen Celebration and Fundraiser planned Nov. 18
Veterans Voices Writing Project, a national organization based in Kansas City, Mo., will observe its 54th annual Veterans Pen Celebration and Fundraiser from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at The National World War I Museum and Memorial at 2 Memorial Drive in Kansas City, Mo. The event is open to the public, and there is no admission charge. Keynote speaker, Dr. Jon Kerstetter, will discuss his recently published memoir, “Crossings: A Doctor-Soldier’s Story,” which details his experiences in war-torn Rwanda, Kosovo and Bosnia and his three tours in Iraq at the height of the fighting. Legends holiday tree lighting to be Nov. 18
The Legends Outlets will hold its 13th annual Legendary Tree Lighting Ceremony from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the shopping center at I-70 and I-435 in Kansas City, Kansas. A 45-foot synchronized animated holiday tree at the Civic Courtyard Fountain near the theater will be the centerpiece of the event. According to a spokesman, this year’s event will include a visit by Santa Claus, kids’ activities, free hot chocolate and s’mores, mascots roaming around, giveaways, and performances by five bands.
