Renaissance Festival continues Sunday
The 41st annual Renaissance Festival will continue Sunday, Sept. 10, and will run on weekends and Columbus Day through Oct. 15. Highland Games Championship is the theme for Sunday, Sept. 10, celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture. The annual Highland Heavy Games Championships will be held all day on the Joust Field at the festival. A Haggis Eating Competition is planned at 2:45 p.m. at the Washer Well Stage. Those who bring five nonperishable food items to donate to Harvesters will receive a buy one, get one ticket opportunity on a regular-priced ticket on Sunday. One-room schoolhouse at Ag Hall to celebrate 100th birthday Sept. 10
The one-room schoolhouse at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, Bonner Springs, will celebrate its 100th birthday anniversary on Sunday afternoon. The Island Creek School was originally located outside of Piper, Kansas, before being moved to the Ag Hall, where it serves as an educational exhibit on rural life. A birthday celebration with cake, stories and games will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Ag Hall, 630 N. 130th, (near 130th and State), Bonner Springs.

A meeting on Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area plan will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Mission Adelante, 22 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The NRSA area is from 16th street on the east, City Park and 32nd on the west, Central Avenue and Orville on the north, and I-70 on the south. A draft plan for the neighborhood will be presented, and public comments will be accepted about the plan. There will be light refreshments and child care. A Spanish translator will attend.
Bonner library to start 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program
Children may be signed up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, Kan. The goal is to have read 1,000 books before the child starts kindergarten. If parents read a book a night to their child, they will have read 1,095 books in three years. Books can be repeated in this program. Sign up at the library to collect a folder and reading logs and start reading. There will be a kickoff party at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. Wyandotte County Museum exhibit on the Underground Railroad continues
The Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, has a new exhibit on the Underground Railroad on display. “Through Darkness to Light” features photographs taken mostly at night of sites along the Underground Railroad. The exhibit runs through Oct. 10. There are companion artifacts from the pre-Civil War era here currently on display at the museum. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
