Renaissance Festival continues Sunday
The 41st annual Renaissance Festival will continue Sunday, Sept. 10, and will run on weekends and Columbus Day through Oct. 15. Highland Games Championship is the theme for Sunday, Sept. 10, celebrating Scottish and Celtic culture. The annual Highland Heavy Games Championships will be held all day on the Joust Field at the festival. A Haggis Eating Competition is planned at 2:45 p.m. at the Washer Well Stage. Those who bring five nonperishable food items to donate to Harvesters will receive a buy one, get one ticket opportunity on a regular-priced ticket on Sunday. One-room schoolhouse at Ag Hall to celebrate 100th birthday Sept. 10
The one-room schoolhouse at the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame, Bonner Springs, will celebrate its 100th birthday anniversary on Sunday afternoon. The Island Creek School was originally located outside of Piper, Kansas, before being moved to the Ag Hall, where it serves as an educational exhibit on rural life. A birthday celebration with cake, stories and games will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Ag Hall, 630 N. 130th, (near 130th and State), Bonner Springs.

Leavenworth Road Association to meet Sept. 12

The Leavenworth Road Association will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Eisenhower Community Center, 2901 N. 72nd, Kansas City, Kansas. After a social hour and potluck dinner at 6 p.m., there will be a meeting at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Loren Taylor, local historian, on Kansas City, Kansas, history. The meeting is open to the public. The LRA members will be collecting cleaning supplies (no liquids) for hurricane victims.

Women’s Chamber plans meeting Sept. 13
The Kansas City, Kansas, Women’s Chamber of Commerce is planning an educational program from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd St., Kansas City, Kansas. Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area meeting planned
A meeting on Neighborhood Revitalization Strategy Area plan will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Mission Adelante, 22 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The NRSA area is from 16th street on the east, City Park and 32nd on the west, Central Avenue and Orville on the north, and I-70 on the south. A draft plan for the neighborhood will be presented, and public comments will be accepted about the plan. There will be light refreshments and child care. A Spanish translator will attend.

Bonner library to start 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program
Children may be signed up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, Kan. The goal is to have read 1,000 books before the child starts kindergarten. If parents read a book a night to their child, they will have read 1,095 books in three years. Books can be repeated in this program. Sign up at the library to collect a folder and reading logs and start reading. There will be a kickoff party at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. The Shepherd’s Center will offer Adventures in Learning on Friday, Sept. 15, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The schedule includes health screenings and fellowship from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m.; local government issues with Mike Taylor from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; a travelogue and video on the life of Babe Ruth presented by Ed Shutt from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; health program on all-inclusive care for the elderly from 11 a.m. to noon; a talk about the 1954 World Series by Ed Shutt; lunch for $5 including pulled pork, baked beans, salad, dessert and coffee, provided by Ebenezer Ministries; lunch program by Superintendent Cynthia Lane of the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Schools. Leavenworth Road Parade to be Sept. 17
The 32nd annual Leavenworth Road Parade is scheduled Sunday, Sept. 17, from 71st and Leavenworth Road to 51st and Leavenworth Road. Some participants will join the parade at 64th and Leavenworth Road. There is no charge to have an entry in the parade. Parade entries are due in by Sept. 12. There is no charge to attend the parade. Piper Fest to be Sept. 30
The Piper Fest, with a Car and Truck Show, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Piper High School, 4400 N. 107th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Registration will open at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $10. All proceeds will benefit the Piper School District. Along with the Car and Truck Show, there will be a pancake breakfast, silent auction, carnival, food trucks, craft show, fun run, and special awards. Wyandotte County Museum exhibit on the Underground Railroad continues
The Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, has a new exhibit on the Underground Railroad on display. “Through Darkness to Light” features photographs taken mostly at night of sites along the Underground Railroad. The exhibit runs through Oct. 10. There are companion artifacts from the pre-Civil War era here currently on display at the museum. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
