Renaissance Festival opens season on Sept. 2
The 41st annual Renaissance Festival will open Saturday, Sept. 2, and run on weekends plus Labor Day and Columbus Day, through Oct. 15. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The festival site is located at 130th and State Avenue in Bonner Springs. For more information, visit www.kcrenfest.com.

Wyandotte County Museum exhibit on the Underground Railroad continues today
The Wyandotte County Museum, 631 N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, has a new exhibit on the Underground Railroad on display. “Through Darkness to Light” features photographs taken mostly at night of sites along the Underground Railroad. The exhibit runs through Oct. 10. There are companion artifacts from the pre-Civil War era here currently on display at the museum. Special Labor Day weekend hours include 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Labor Day. There is no admission charge. Mariachi and Folkloric Festival scheduled today
A Mariachi and Folkloric Festival is scheduled until 11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th Street and Ridge Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. More than 50 different canopy tents will sell food and refreshments. There will be a four-hour Community Fiesta Dance indoors with different bands. A moonwalk, children’s games and a disc jockey also are part of the festival.

Offices closed Sept. 4
Unified Government offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 4, for the Labor Day holiday. There will be no residential trash collection by Waste Management on Sept. 4. Trash pickup will be delayed one day that week.

Bonner library to start 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program
Children may be signed up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program starting Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Bonner Springs City Library, 201 N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, Kan. The goal is to have read 1,000 books before the child starts kindergarten. If parents read a book a night to their child, they will have read 1,095 books in three years. Books can be repeated in this program. Sign up at the library to collect a folder and reading logs and start reading. There will be a kickoff party at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. Blood drive scheduled Sept. 5

Program planned on colon cancer
A program on colon cancer prevention and treatment will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Intervention process to be discussed
Those attending a program from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, Sept. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., will hear about the intervention process. The program is for professionals lay persons, clergy, family members and anyone concerned about active or recovering addicts. Maria Looper will facilitate the class. Support group to meet Tuesday

Urban blight training planned
Urban blight training is available from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Keeler Women’s Center, 2220 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. The program is presented by Chiquita Miller of K-State Extension and Research. Strolling for Sickle Cell 5K to be Sept. 9
The seventh annual 5K Fun Walk, Strolling for Sickle Cell, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 9, at Kansas City Kansas Community College Conference Center, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. Central Avenue parade scheduled Sept. 9
The Central Avenue Betterment Association parade is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. The parade route starts at 18th Street and travels to Bethany Park at 11th and Central Avenue. LaPlacita Community Festival will be held after the parade at Bethany Park, 11th and Central. There will be music, food and activities. A high school band musical showdown will be held as bands arrive at Bethany Park, and will end around 12:15 p.m. At noon to 12:30 p.m., Rosemary’s Fiesta Mexicana will perform. At 1 p.m., the Calle Vida Band with Pablo Sanhueza will perform. At 3:30 p.m., the J-Love Band will perform. Library in the Park celebration to be Sept. 9
Library in the Park, a celebration by the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Big 11 Lake, at 11th and State Avenue. The free festival will include live music, food and activities. The book, “Little Melba and Her Big Trombone,” by Katheryn Russell-Brown, will be given away to the first 500 children. The event also includes a musical instrument “petting zoo” from the Kansas City Symphony, face painting, and other activities. Those attending will be able to sample free tacos from five local restaurants in a contest to determine the best. Sheridan’s will provide frozen custard. Everything will be free. Grinter Place Summerfest planned Sept. 9
The Grinter Place Summerfest will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at 1400 S. 78th, Kansas City, Kansas. Transportation is the theme of the annual event this year, with displays and activities tying together the various years that the Grinter Place has existed, from the 1850s through today. Summerfest will include historical re-enactments, a car show, musical entertainment, the Grinter Quilters at work, and a display of public safety vehicles. Admission is free to the Summerfest. There will be a charge for barbecue and concession stand, horse rides and inflatables for kids. Tours of the Grinter House will be $3 for adults and $1 for kids. Art show opening reception to be Saturday at Alcott
“Paper and Glue: Cut-Papers Works of Art” by Allison Welter will have an opening reception at from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Alcott Arts Center, 180 S. 18th St., Kansas City, Kansas. “The Variegated World of Kitt Van Hassel” from Kitt Van Hassel, a Kansas City area illustrator, also will have a show with a reception from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Alcott Arts Center. The art shows will run through Saturday, Oct. 7. Welter is from the St. Louis, Mo., area and attended the Kansas City Art Institute. She has a bachelor’s in illustration. Van Hassel graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute and has used traditional ink and watercolor media to create illustrations. The Alcott Center is not ADA accessible. Leavenworth Road Association to meet Sept. 12

The 32nd annual Leavenworth Road Parade is scheduled Sunday, Sept. 17, from 71st and Leavenworth Road to 51st and Leavenworth Road. Some participants will join the parade at 64th and Leavenworth Road. There is no charge to have an entry in the parade. Parade entries are due in by Sept. 15. There is no charge to attend the parade. The Piper Fest, with a Car and Truck Show, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Piper High School, 4400 N. 107th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Registration will open at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $10. All proceeds will benefit the Piper School District. Along with the Car and Truck Show, there will be a pancake breakfast, silent auction, carnival, food trucks, craft show, fun run, and special awards.
