Dangerous heat continues today

An excessive heat warning is in effect today until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

The high could be near 101, with a heat index as high as 111, the weather service said.

The temperature at 11 a.m. was 91 degrees, with a heat index of 100, according to the weather service.

Residents are advised to stay in air-conditioning and drink a lot of fluids today.

A cold front will bring some relief from the heat by later this evening and early into next week.

The weather service said there is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. today.

There is a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms later tonight, mainly after 7 p.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 76. Between a quarter and a half-inch of rain is possible.

Sunday, it will be partly sunny with a high near 92 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m., the weather service said. The heat index could reach 99.
