The Kansas City T-Bones (30-22) could never get going Friday night as Winnipeg (30-23) rode a 14 hit/16 run performance to take the opener 16-1 at Winnipeg, Canada.
Left-handed starter Zach Dodson (4-3) tossed a quality start for Winnipeg, going seven innings and allowing a solo home run to Keven Keyes for his only run allowed on the night.
Dodson was overshadowed by the Goldeyes offense that got three RBIs from veteran Reggie Abercrombie and another six from Shawn Pleffner who went 4-for-5.
The Goldeyes scored seven runs off T-Bones starter Calvin Drummond in the first two innings, and the right-hander was charged with a total of 11 earned runs in four innings of work. Winnipeg also had contributions from Andrew Sohn and Mason Katz, who each hit home runs in the win.
Zach Morgenstern worked three innings and did not fare much better for Kansas City. He gave up five runs, only three earned, on four hits as the pitching staff walked a season high 10 batters to help feed the offensive machine of Winnipeg.
The loss for Kansas City along with a win for Lincoln sent the T-Bones a game back in the Central Division of the American Association and losers of two straight. Tyler Horan went 2-for-4 for Kansas City and Myles Smith worked a scoreless inning to extend his scoreless relief streak to 12 2/3 and 11 appearances.
The three game series continues with game two Saturday night with the game time set for 7:05 p.m. Kanas City will send out RHP Gabe Perez (5-3, 5.23) to face RHP Zach Nuding (2-6, 6.33).
The game can be heard online on the T-Bones Broadcast Network on the T-Bones’ MixLR page on the MixLR app on a phone or device, or head to tbonesbaseball.com and click “listen live.” Those who are used to following the games at home on AmericanAssociation.TV can listen in live there as well to the audio call of the game.
