Hot and humid weather today; storms possible tonight

Today will be mostly sunny and humid with temperatures reaching to the low 90s with heat index values up to 99, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms are expected to develop over eastern Kansas and southern Iowa in the late afternoon and then travel east, the weather service said.

These storms could be strong to severe as they push through with large hail and damaging winds being the main threat, according to the weather service.

Some left over showers will remain in the morning Friday, the weather service said.

Saturday dewpoints will climb into the mid-70s making the low to mid 90s temperatures feel like 101-105 degrees in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Saturday will be the hottest heat index day of the year so far, the weather service said. Precautions need to be taken this week for those sensitive to heat-related illnesses, according to the weather service.

Once again a round of strong to severe storms is expected to form over Iowa and move down into the area overnight Saturday into Sunday with large hail and winds in being the primary threat, according to the weather service.

Today, it will be sunny with a high near 94, the weather service said, and heat index values as high as 99. There will be a south wind of 5 to 9 mph.

Tonight, there will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service. It will be mostly cloudy with a low of 71 and a south southwest wind of 8 mph. Between a tenth and quarter of an inch of rain is possible.

Friday, it will be mostly sunny, with a high of 91, the weather service said. The heat index may be as high as 97. There will be a south wind of 9 mph.

Friday night, there will be a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 a.m., according to the weather service. The low will be around 74, with a south wind of 8 to 11 mph. Between a tenth and quarter of an inch of rain is possible.

Saturday, it will be mostly sunny with a high of 94, the weather service said. There will be a south southwest wind of 7 to 10 mph.

Saturday night, there is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. The low will be around 68. Between a half and three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

Sunday, it will be mostly sunny with a high near 83, the weather service said.

Sunday night, it will be mostly clear with a low of 61, according to the weather service.
