Police memorial service planned Wednesday

A police memorial service is planned at noon Wednesday, May 3, in front of Kansas City, Kansas, City Hall, 701 N. 7th St.

The public is invited to the event. The annual memorial service is sponsored by the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 4, and is a community event to honor officers who died in the line of duty.

During the past year, the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department lost two members in the line of duty, Detective Brad Lancaster and Capt. Robert David Melton.

“The loss of Detective Lancaster and Captain Melton saddened the lives of so many throughout our community, yet the outpouring of support was beyond belief,” said a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department. “We would like to invite the citizens of Kansas City, Kansas, as well as the metro area, to join us in once again remembering those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting this community. “

The two officers also will be honored at the annual Kansas memorial ceremony at noon Friday, May 5, at the Kansas Capitol in Topeka.

The two officers also will be honored on Wednesday, May 10, at the annual Kansas Association of Chiefs of Police awards banquet. The families will receive the Chief Award in the officers’ name. It is the highest honor of the Association of Chiefs of Police.
