Electricity shut off for 96-year-old resident

Mary Winchell, 96, said power has been off at her house for about two weeks.

An electrical meter to Mary Winchell’s home was damaged, resulting in the meter being removed.

A 96-year-old resident of Kansas City, Kansas, says she doesn’t know what to do with the power being off at her house for a few weeks.

Mary Winchell, 96, lives on North 81st and says her electrical meter was damaged when a truck drove through her yard.

Lines went down in the backyard, and the utility took out the damaged meter, she said. The truck also may have damaged a water line underground, she believes.

Winchell has lived there for more than 60 years, and said she wants to remain there.

“I just don’t know what to do,” she said.

  1. what asses the power company must be to do that to someone so old and I’m sure on a limited income

  2. Why isn’t the utility co. putting another meter up & getting her electricity? They can check her waterline as well. This is wrong on many many levels!

    1. Because the line (wires from pole to house) and the meter box are really the responsibility of the home owner.

  3. I am acquainted with Mary, wonderful lady. Why isn’t the owner of the lumber truck that went through her yard getting this taken care of. Looks to me like it is their responsibility!

    1. Does anyone next door, in the neighborhood, or does Ms. Mary know what company it was?

  4. It seems to me that local churches would step up to work on this. I am many years and many miles removed from the area, but I can name a couple of churches that have the man power & resources to minister in Christian love to this lady.
