Update: A fatigued truck driver hit a KDOT arrow board in a work zone on westbound I-670 at Central Avenue today, sending the sign into the middle of the Kansas River.
A KDOT spokeswoman said more likely than not, the arrow board will not be fished out of the river at this time. The approximate cost to replace the arrow board is $4,400, according to the spokeswoman.
No KDOT workers were hit in the accident. The work zone was in placed for bridge inspection today on the westbound I-670 bridges.
KDOT offered these work zone safety tips:
• Pay full attention to and follow all traffic control – arrow boards, signs, cones – leading up to and through the project work zone.
• Stay alert and minimize distractions through the work zone. Dedicate your full focus to the highway. Keep two hands on the wheel and two eyes on the road at all times.
• Keep your headlights on. Merge into the proper lane and be aware as traffic patterns can change daily in the work zone.
• Don’t tailgate – keep a safe distance away from other vehicles. Change lanes safely by following all traffic control in the work zone.

The arrow board fell into the Kansas River, according to a KDOT spokeswoman. No KDOT workers were hit, the spokeswoman added.
